Lady Eleanor
Bashee playing magician sitting lotus on the floor
Belly dancing beauty with a power driven saw
Had my share of nightmares, didn't think there could be much more
then in walked Rodrick Usher with the Lady Eleanor.
She tied my eyes with ribbon of a silken ghostly thread
I gazed with trouble vision on an old four poster bed
where Eleanor had risen to kiss the neck below my head
and bid me come along with her to the land of the dancing dead.
But it's all right, Lady Eleanor
all right, Lady Eleanor
I'm all right where I am.
She gazed with loving beauty like a mother to a son
like living, dying, seeing, being all rolled into one
then all at once I heard some music playing in my bones
the same old song I'd heard for years, reminding me of home.
But it's all right, Lady Eleanor
all right, Lady Eleanor
I'm all right where I am.
Then creeping on towards me, licking lips with tongues of fire
a host of golden demons screaming lust and base desire
and when it seemed for certain that the screams could get no higher
I heard a voice above the rest screaming "You're liar".
But it's all right, Lady Eleanor
all right, Lady Eleanor
I'm all right hearing your wrongs.
Road to Kingdom Come
I have no one to call my friend
the road I travel has no end
and so I turn my face up to the sun
and walk on down the road to kingdom come.
And as I walk this lonely road
nobody helps me bear my load
and somebody tell me what it is I've done
Condemned to walk the road to kingdom come.
And if you pass me on the side
why don't you stop and let me ride
you just had a better deal as some
walking down the road to kingdom come.
And if you pass this way someday
and you should find I've gone my way
there'll always be some poor boy on the bum
walking down the road to kingdom come
walking down the road to kingdom come.
Winter Song
When winter's shadowy fingers first pursue you down the street
and your boots no longer lie about the cold around your feet
Do you spare a thought for summer whose passage is complete
Whose memories lie in ruins and whose ruins lie in heat ?
When winter..... Comes howling in.
When the wind is singing strangely, blowing music thru your head
and your rain splattered windows make you decide to stay in bed
Do you spare a thought for the homeless tramp who wishes he was dead
or do you pull the bed-clothes higher, dream of summertime instead ?
When winter..... Comes howling in.
The creeping cold has fingers, decorates without permission
and mystic crystal snowdrops only aggravate the condition.
Do you spare one thought for the gypsy with no secure position
Who's turned and spurned by village and town, at the magistrate's decision ?
When winter..... Comes howling in.
When the turkey's in the oven, and the Christma's presents are bought
and Santa's in his module, he's an American astronaut
Do you spare one thought for Jesus, who had nothing but his thoughts,
Who got busted just for talking, and befriending the wrong sorts ?
When winter..... comes howling in.
When winter..... comes howling in.
Turn a Deaf Ear
The stage director stood up when he called the actors down
He asked them all to say three words, up down and around
so up down and around they cry with one according voice
and up down and around they went, for it was their only choice.
I can only turn again, to the front again
only to turn again, to the rear
Turn again, turn again, turn turn turn again
I can listen, but I can't hear.
My friends girl she has a wireless aerial sticking out of her head
and a pile of true romances lying underneath the bed
and a giant poster of Robby Noakes just beside the door
but I know she'll get along find without him if it doesn't see her anymore.
I can only turn again, to the front again
only to turn again, to the rear
Turn again, turn again, turn turn turn again
I can listen, but I can't hear.
The strings were cut from the guitar puppet singer on the stage
and his music became furious and he's stamped his foot in rage
the girls all screamed in agony, the boys they gaped in fear
and the song was called 'have mercy baby', have mercy on my ear.
I can only turn again, to the front again
only to turn again, to the rear
Turn again, turn again, turn turn turn again
I can listen, but I can't hear.
I remember what the old man said on his little wooden stand
as he spoke very quietly with a waving of his hand
every pigeon do its own hole, but what he seemed to say
I know I should go looking for, a better place to stay.
I can only turn again, to the front again
only to turn again, to the rear
Turn again, turn again, turn turn turn again
I can listen, but I can't hear
Turn again, turn again, turn turn turn again
I can listen, but I can't hear.
Clear White Light - part 2
Do you believe, the clear white light, is goin' to guide us on ?
Running along the ground singing a song in the morning light,
follow a flower it feels as far as out of sight.
Turning your heads to the clouds and the skies and the trees,
'cause you never know what you might see.
Do you believe, the clear white light, is going to guide us on,
the way ?
Seeing the sun as it wants to be seen by ev'ryone,
Melting the sky throw a hole in your eye where the magic comes.
Turning your heads to the skies with the clouds in your eyes,
'cause you never know what you might find.
Do you believe, the clear white light, is going to guide us on,
the way ?
Now is the time to be loving and kind to your fellow men,
Seeing the sympathy starting out all over again.
Now is the time to give love just one more go,
'cause you never know what you might know.
And I believe, the clear white light, is going to guide us on
Yes I believe, the clear white light, is going to guide us on.
We Can Swing Together
No one came to criticise, no one to complain,
just to pass a little bit of time, play some human games.
Some were smoking 'roll your owns', while others they had none,
Ev'rybody was holding hands, singing this little song.
We can swing together, 'cause we feel we're doing it right.
We can swing together, we can swing all through the night.
Then when things were happening, around about ten to four,
there was a screeching of brakes, dogs barking outside, and a hammering on the door.
Then the voice of officialdom, saying 'Open in the name of the law',
but we just kept on holding hands, and singing this song some more.
We can swing together, 'cause we feel we're doing it right.
We can swing together, we can swing all through the night.
Then they broke down all the doors, and kicked the windows in,
They let their doggies off the leads, and they ransacked everything.
They stood us all against the wall, their faces split with grins,
and then they linked each others' handcuffs and they merrily began to sing.
We can swing together, 'cause we feel we're doing it right.
We can swing together, we can swing all through the night.
They took us to see the County Judge, with a wig-hat on his head,
he heard our case with a smile on his face, and this is what he said :
"I'll have to send you all to jail, for doing this terrible thing."
And as I walked down to the cells, I swear I heard him sing.
We can swing together, 'cause we feel we're doing it right.
We can swing together, we can swing all through the night .........
Alan in the River with Flowers
Here I sit with time running out on me
Knowing while it's dreams that are upon me
there's grace of a kind, that eases my mind some time.
Float me down the river,
Show me what it's like to be there
Float me down the river
Tell me stories dreams and nightmares.
Here I sit the garden surrounds me
Flowers in hand it's dreams that are upon me
and I don't deny that time passes by sometimes.
Float me down the river,
Show me what it's like to be there
Float me down the river
Tell me stories dreams and nightmares.
Float me down the river,
show me what it's like to be low
float me down the river
tell me stories dreams and nightmares.
Down
Down, down, I'm feeling down
but for now I'll stick around
just to see if it was really me
or if I'm right in thinking you're wrong.
You took me on a pleasure trip
but the waves got high and sunk the ship
and the captain was mad and so was his crew
and they all looked just the same as you.
Up you took me high
Earth to the moon and back thru the sky
but the wings that I wore didn't fit me too well
I only wanted to fly but I fell.
Down, down, I'm feeling low
but sooner or later it's got to go
this restless feeling in my shoe
Will carry me to somebody new.
Down, down, I'm feeling low
but sooner or later it's got to go
it's restless feeling in my shoe
Will carry me to somebody new, somebody new.
Down, down, I'm feeling low
but sooner or later it's got to go
it's restless feeling in my shoe...
The Things I Should Have Said
Two by two the lovers wandered off into the night
Leaving me alone with someone that I only knew by sight
so we sat and watched each other thru the fading firelight
each one waiting for the silence to be broken.
But the things I should have said
that were whispering in my head, would not be spoken.
The black-eyed master glared at me with malice in his eye
the spittle from his twisted lips ran down to his bow-tie
I was done before his accusations I did not deny
when he done with me I stood outside there shattered.
And the things I should have said
that came rushing to my head, no longer matter.
Teachers from whose mellowed mouths great pearls of wisdom fall
to those who scrawl obscenities upon the alley walls
the joke is on the bloke who never spoke a word at all
but whose dreams lay unrevealed 'til they were rotten.
And the things I should have said
that I was keeping in my head, have been forgotten.
The things I should have said.
Jackhammer Blues
I'm a Jackhammer man from a Jackhammer Town
Born with a Jackhammer in my hand
Lord, God, I got them Jackhammer Blues
Jackhammer man from a Jackhammer Town
I hammer on my hammer till the sun goes down
Lord, God, I got them Jackhammer Blues.
Gonna hammer on a hammer till I get done
Sixty-six and a highway one
Lord, God, I got them Jackhammer Blues
Got a Jackhammer one just as sweet as pie
I'll hammer on my hammer till the day I die
Lord, God, I got hem Jackhammer Blues.
I'm a Jackhammer man from a Jackhammer Town
Born with a Jackhammer in my hand
Lord, God, I got them Jackhammer Blues
A Jackhammer woman just as sweet as pie
I'll hammer on my hammer till the day I die
Lord, God, I got them Jackhammer Blues.
I hammered on my hammer all night long
I hammered a baby from midnight on
Lord, God, I got them Jackhammer Blues
I'm a Jackhammer man just as sweet as pie
I'll hammer on my hammer till the day I die
Lord, God, I got them Jackhammer Blues.
Scarecrow Song
The songs you sing are meaningless
the words you say yo're wrong.
Your saturday nights they are sober
and your sundays are too long.
Your lucky days are over
your lucky days are gone.
You've cast away your coloured coat
the illusions seemed too strong.
Now in the wintery season
you can hear the scarecrow song.
Your lucky days are over
your lucky days are gone.
The bells have all stopped their ringing
the music sounded wrong.
And now the only song, worth singing
is the sad old scarecrow song.
Your lucky days are over
your lucky days are gone.
